DECIDE achievements

DECIDE ACHIEVEMENTSOn February 28th 2013 the DECIDE project has reached its end. DECIDE, a European project within the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), in its 30 months of activity, implemented an integrated e-Infrastructure and user-friendly, ubiquitous services dedicated to the study and early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The DECIDE Grid-based e-Infrastructure relies on the Pan-European backbone GEANT and the NRENs (National Research and Education Networks) and offers computing and storage resources and data-intensive processing tools. Applications integrated in the DECIDE environment allow clinicians and researchers to perform the computer-aided extraction of diagnostic markers from MR and PET/SPECT images and EEG, exploiting a multimodal distributed reference database including 850 datasets from normal subjects and 2200 from neurological subjects, through a simple web interface.

In particular the challenges that DECIDE has successfully addressed were the development of the Grid-based infrastructure, the integration of the neuGRID infrastructure in the DECIDE e-Infrastructure, the deployment and customization of the DECIDE Science Gateway that integrates grid components in a customizable web interface, the tuning and the testing of all four applications originally foreseen (GridSPM, GridMRIseg, GridEEG aGridANN and GridGDI), the organization of an intense training programme allowing to train 114 professional to run the applications, the performance of two rounds of usability tests on the interface, a thorough study of the legal framework for European countries in order to identify and address potential security and privacy issues connected with the use of the service.
